Xiaosha is the eleventh solar term of the 24 solar terms in the lunar calendar and the fifth solar term of summer, indicating the start of the summer season. "Sha" means heat, and Xiaosha represents a little heat, signifying that the weather is beginning to get hot, but it hasn't reached the hottest point yet. This type of climate is generally observed in most regions of China.

In the northern region, there is a tradition of eating dumplings during the first period of the dog days, when people often have a poor appetite and tend to lose weight, commonly referred to as 'bitter summer.' Dumplings are considered appetizing food in traditional customs, and their shape resembles ingots, symbolizing 'ingots bring blessings.' Eating dumplings symbolizes abundant blessings.
